The Royal Promenade and Central Park are two separate neighborhoods within the overall public zone of the ship; both encompassing important venues that provide energy and vibrance. Our proposal studies the two spaces as a whole because of their physical connections and placement. We solved horizontal and vertical challenges of circulation, provided a vibrant facade system incorporating structure, and allowed the guest experience to alter the system.
To get a sense of scale, initially, we studied various pedestrian streets around the world. We compared our available space to the sizes of these pedestrian-friendly areas and determined the ideal spacing of neighborhood venues, establishing our horizontal strategy. The horizontal strategy breaks down the 180m extent of space into more human-scaled facades, indicative of SoHo.
Our vertical strategy, connecting the Royal Promenade and Central Park, worked through incorporating elements such as skylights, sunken plazas, and material connections. The skylights worked as a physical link between the two spaces vertically as the facades would continue up through the skylight, allowing sunlight to flood the Promenade.
Our proposal was selected and we were partnered with Urban Robot Associates for the Architectural and Interior Design of these neighborhoods as well as managing coordination between the venue architects.
